December 22, 2022
If you’re ready to shut the door on 2022 and make a fresh start as you head into 2023, you’re definitely not alone. In light of all the things we’ve had to deal with this year, the idea of starting anew in 2023 has special appeal. For some people, this means making New Year’s resolutions that promise to help them start the year on the right foot. Unfortunately, though, most New Year’s resolutions fail because our brains simply aren’t wired for making sudden changes to our deeply ingrained habits.
So instead of making the typical diet, exercise, and money-related resolutions this year, why not shake things up by modifying how you approach resolutions and trying something a little different? Here are several resolutions to consider as you move forward into 2023.
Gyms are always packed in January, and people promise themselves they’ll use the home exercise equipment they got for the holidays. Once February rolls around, though, routines typically go back to normal.
One of the main reasons for this is that when it comes to exercise, we need to find ways to move our bodies that actually inspire joy. Most people think healthy physical activity has to involve going to the gym and working up a sweat instead of just doing things that make us smile. So for the coming year, focus on choosing a type of movement that feels fun, whether it’s roller skating, playing Frisbee with your dog at the park, or learning some killer moves to show off when you’re dancing the night away at the hottest Gaslamp nightclubs.
Make 2023 the year you bid farewell to social media clutter. Think about your social media feeds the same way you think about the art you choose for your home. Consider what you’re paying attention to and why, and give your feeds a healthy detox. Remove anything that tempts you to spend money on impulse, and delete the messages that tell you you’re “less than,” urging you to deny yourself the things you love in order to please someone else. Use your social media as a space for personal affirmation, and you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel.
Instead of going on yet another super-restrictive diet, why not focus on changing your relationship with food? The prevailing diet culture fosters a scarcity mindset, which does nothing but set you up for a spiral of shame that starts the first time you “cheat” on that new fad diet that was never even realistic in the first place.
Instead, focus on engaging all your senses when you source, cook, and eat your food. Using your senses when you’re shopping for groceries can be as easy as selecting the produce that looks, smells, and feels best to you. Concentrate on being more intentional as you cook by consciously paying attention to your senses of smell and taste when you season your food.
When you approach your food with a sense of intentional awareness, you’re a lot more likely to improve your eating habits without the sense of deprivation that comes with restrictive diets. You’ll boost your mental health as well as your physical health, and you’ll feel a lot better about yourself.
Now’s a great time to assess what serves you well and what doesn’t, and your email inbox is the perfect place to start, especially if it’s clogged up with hundreds or even thousands of unopened emails. If your inbox is full of newsletters you never read, ads for stores you don’t shop at anymore, or emails about seminars or courses you’re never going to take, get busy with your unsubscribe game. Feel the anxiety melt away as you watch the number of unread emails dwindle. This is a great way to actively prioritize the value of your own time and energy, which is the best thing you can do for yourself as you head into the new year.
The spaces we live in have a direct effect on how we feel, so start the new year by focusing on your physical space. For example, if you work from home, how does it feel when you’re working in your home office? Do you feel like the environment supports your growth and productivity? If you’re feeling stale, stifled, or stuck, now may be the perfect time to clear out all the old stuff that isn’t serving you well anymore. This doesn’t mean you have to buy new stuff to replace the old items, although a few well-chosen pieces can transform the look and feel of any space.
Our bodies change all the time, and it can be frustrating when some of our favorite pieces of clothing don’t fit well anymore. Unless they have a lot of sentimental value, get rid of the items that don’t work for your body the way it is today, whether it’s smaller or larger. Keeping reminders of weight loss goals that weren’t met or unhealthy habits such as following starvation diets can take a toll on your mental wellbeing. Shut down your inner critic, donate those items, and treat yourself to clothes you actually look and feel great in.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is spend more time with people you really enjoy being around. Your social circle has a huge impact on your stress levels, attitude, and happiness. Commit to setting aside time every week to call or meet up with your favorite friends and family members, whether it’s getting together for a walk, meeting for a cup of coffee, or chatting over Skype.
