Puerto Rican reggaeton star Rauw Alejandro, whose music you know if you spend any time at the hottest Gaslamp nightclubs, has added San Diego to his world concert tour schedule. He’s scheduled to play Pechanga Arena on April 14th, and there are a lot of reasons you should mark this date on your calendar. Alejandro’s 2022 world tour follows the huge success of his Afrodisiaco and Vice Versa albums, which feature many hits, such as “Gracias Por Nada.” Alejandro’s unique sound using early reggaeton beats gets major radio and streaming airplay, but he’s at his absolute best when he’s blowing the roof off every venue where he performs live.

From Mixtapes to the King of Modern Reggaeton
Raúl Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz was born into a musical family that embraced stylistic diversity. His father played guitar, and his mother was a professional singer. In his native Puerto Rico, Alejandro’s parents introduced him to a world of music that went beyond Caribbean rhythms. He’ll be the first to tell you he’s more of a dedicated music fan than a reggaeton performer, and music is what got him over the heartbreak of failing to realize his dream of becoming a professional soccer player. Around 2016, he started making self-produced SoundCloud mixtapes as a form of self-therapy, and it only took a couple of years for Sony to notice him. By late 2019, Alejandro was already being called the King of Modern Reggaeton thanks to tracks such as “Fantasías,” a collaboration with Farruko.
Musical Diversity
Because of the varied musical education Alejandro’s parents provided, he admired the pop music sensibilities of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, but he was also deeply influenced by the sounds of his native San Juan. During his childhood, that meant listening to a lot of Daddy Yankee. While living in Miami, Alejandro admired Ciara’s ability to record club-friendly hits that were ripe for remixing. His modern style pays tribute to the origins of reggaeton in Panama, which had touches of Latin R&B melodies.
Stage Presence
When Alejandro played a series of sold-out concerts in El Coliseo de San Juan last year, he brought the house down. The choreography alone is a reason to go to his concerts. It rivals anything you’ll see at the MTV Video Music Awards, and it features couples dancing an artistic rendition of the sensual perreo dance. As for Alejandro himself, he combines the showmanship of Elvis Presley with some very sexy moves, and it’s not unusual to see bras and panties being thrown toward him onstage.
Surprise Appearances
You never know who’s going to join Alejandro onstage when he goes on tour. Last year in Puerto Rico, no one expected Mexican rock band Reik to show up and play “Loquita.” Later, Chencho Corleone suddenly appeared onstage to join Alejandro in a fiery version of “El Efecto.” Alejandro’s partner, Rosalía, also joins him onstage sometimes.
